Can dogs eat lettuce? This thought might have crossed your mind if your dog begs while you’re rustling up a salad for a healthy meal. If humans can eat lettuce, can dogs safely eat it too?

The short answer is yes, dogs can eat lettuce. There are more than a few health benefits that can come from feeding your dog lettuce; although, there is just one little, messy potential side effect that you should be aware of.

As always, you must ask your regular vet before sharing any human food with your favorite pooch, including lettuce. Here’s what you need to know about lettuce and dogs.

How Is Lettuce Good For Dogs?

Lettuce is not toxic or poisonous for dogs. It’s 90 percent water and also contains some fiber, along with vitamins A and C.

Lettuce is also a low calorie food, so it can be a useful addition to the diet of an overweight dog looking to shed a few pounds.

In some cases, lettuce has also be shown to help lower a dog’s blood pressure.

First of all, it’s important to remember that, in general, you should limit the amount of human or table foods you feed to your dog. If you do decide to try feeding your dog lettuce, and your vet says it’s okay, then aim to use it only as a supplement or a snack.

Always wash the lettuce properly before feeding any to a dog in case it has been treated with chemicals or pesticides at some point during the growing and harvesting process.

It is also worth noting that most dogs fare better with lettuce that has been chopped up into small pieces, rather than being given an entire lettuce leaf all at once.

Finally, in some cases a dog who eats too much lettuce might wind up with a bout of diarrhea, so always be careful not to feed your dog too much lettuce.
